I tutor Computer Science and both English literature and language. My tutoring style is more comprehension focused as I believe that students remember things better when they can use analogies to explain them. I try to cover as much content as possible before going back and filling in gaps, with do now activities for active recall. In my experience as a student, learning the same things for a prolonged period can hinder ones ability to memorise information, so I prefer a more relaxed approach where we ideally seek to get a baseline understanding before refining the more specific details later. I love teaching English because it's one of the most powerful ways people can communicate ideas, emotions, and identity. Seeing students grow more confident in their ability to analyse media and articulate their thoughts is something I find immensely rewarding. I think that English is a subject that helps both practically through media literacy, but also as something that can help offer new perspectives to view the world through. Similarly I also enjoy teaching computer science because of how much influence it has over our day to day lives. I think that being more aware of how computers operate and the systems at play is essential for students stepping into the wider world.
